Deacon Mike was ordained in June of 2009 to the Permanent Diaconate. He assists at Mass, gives homilies once a month on the weekends and sometimes during the week.   Deacon Harris also teaches RCIA and RCIC at OLG to adults and children interested in entering the fullness of the Catholic Church.  He also helps with other ministries including marriage preparation, baptisms, and funerals.

A little personal information: Deacon Mike is the second of five boys reared in Baton Rouge, LA. He attended Our Lady of Mercy and St. Thomas More Elementary Schools and Broadmoor High School.  He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1973 and served on nuclear submarines.  In 1980, Deacon Mike got out of the Navy and began working at the Naval Research Laboratory at the Stennis Space Center as a civil servant.  He received a Masters in OE and his Professional Engineer License in 1984.  During his career at the lab Mike worked as an Engineer, Program Manager and Supervisor of the Mapping and Charting Branch. He retired from the lab in 2009 about six weeks before his ordination.

Deacon Mike met his wife Mary in Charleston, SC; they have four children, two boys and two girls.  Their children attended Holy Trinity, OLA and St.Stanislaus.  Deacon Mike and Mary’s children are all married and they have five grandchildren so far.
